Module Three – How we Really Use the Web

Three Facts of Life

#1 – We don't read, we scan

#2 – We don't make the 'best' choice, we take the first reasonable choice

#3 – We don't figure it out, we muddle through

So the idea is to basically make excellent billboards – make it so that users will find what they are looking for in an efficient manner.

Interestingly Krug states that the Back button is the most used feature in a browser.

Best to use concise, scannable text with objective language.

Focus Groups

Have studied these in another class. Would be handy to hold a focus group but I don't know enough people where I live to do this. I am going to do a survey with a bunch of family and friends from around the world to test out my chosen sites. They will try to recreate the same trip (which I provide, or they make themselves) on all three and then report on each one via the survey. Should be interesting.

Not sure how I'll do the video testing as I don't know many people around here.
